Oregon's MD, DO & PA students need your help!

OMEF IS INVESTING IN OUR FUTURE LEADERS, HELPING THOSE WHO WILL SOMEDAY BE HELPING US

Three things you helped us do this year are:

  1. Award $100,000 in scholarships to recognize leadership talent & offset the rising cost of education
  2. Launch the Conference Assistance Program, which reimbursed up to $500 to more than 20 student leaders who presented, voted and represented Oregon at conferences
  3. Successful pilot of our Mentorship program, matching three female students of color with mentors who are taking a genuine, long-term interest in their future

All of this against a backdrop of rising education costs and historic inflation that is stretching meager student budgets to the breaking point.

Did you know:

  • 40% of students are facing food insecurity right now
  • 50% will graduate already experiencing feelings of burnout
  • 2/3 of students never find a mentor
  • The average student loan for a 4-year medical degree is outpacing inflation and rapidly approaching $300,000, not including undergrad debt

More programs coming in 2023!

  1. Creating a statewide Mentor program accessible to students that need it most
  2. Building student health, wellness and resiliency through classes, social interaction and retreat-style workshops
  3. Financial empowerment education - reducing feelings of despair with budget templates and pro tips, and more

About the Oregon Medical Education Foundation (OMEF)

The Oregon Medical Education Foundation (OMEF) is an independent 501c3 nonprofit organization. Our vision is for Oregon to be the best state to live, work, play and practice medicine.

Our mission: To do our part for a stronger and healthier Oregon by supporting and encouraging MD, DO and PA students along their personal continuums of medical education. We also strive to be good partners to prospective students facing barriers to entering the medical profession and to the wider community through support of public health and wellness education partnerships.

We accomplish this through programs that include scholarships and targeted grants, and are expanding into mentorship, financial empowerment education and more.

Why we exist

The so-called 'Covid Cohort' had the rug pulled out from under them. While program leaders did well in an impossible situation, hundreds of students are still struggling because they missed out on important experiences due to:

  • Limited in-person clinical interactions due to rotation reductions, PPE shortages and more
  • Extensive online learning - studying in isolation, all day, every day, for months
  • Minimal contact with peers for support and connection, compounding feelings of burnout and isolation

Please invest in the future of medicine with a contribution to OMEF this holiday season. Thank you!
